Abstract

Gingival disease in pregnant women is a very common health problem in this population and if left untreated it can worsen or cause complications such as premature birth and low weight in the newborn. The objective of the study was to analyze the behavior of gingival disease during pregnancy in a health unit, for which a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out where information was obtained from the records of the Municipal Health Unit of the Portoviejo canton, Manabí province. , Ecuador, of the pregnant women treated in the period of 3 months, analyzing variables such as: age, place of residence, gestational age, health history, frequency of brushing, presence and degree of gingivitis. 68.42% of pregnant women presented gingivitis, being mild in 50% of cases, gestational age was within 10-15 weeks (34.21%). There was a significant association between brushing frequency (44.74% brushed twice a day) and the degree of gingivitis (p-value = 0.008). In the pregnant women treated, mild gingivitis occurred more frequently, in the first trimester and moderate in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. The main risk factors identified for gingival disease in pregnant women were the gestation period and oral hygiene habits. A significant association was identified between brushing frequency and the degree of gingivitis.
