Abstract

The objective of this research was to develop a bibliometric analysis for retrospective purposes based on the international academic production about tourism and sustainable development, available in ScienceDirect. The time frame studied was from 2002 to 2021. The methodology is based on an exploratory-descriptive study, where keywords and search criteria are analyzed: productivity by authors, journals and lines of research. For the normalization and analysis of the information, EndNote X7, BibExcel, Pajek and VOSviewer software were used. As a result, the year 2021 was identified as the year with the highest productivity, with a total of 350 publications, while the main lines of research were related to sustainable tourist destinations, ecotourism, innovation, climate change and receptive communities. In addition, the relevance of the topic was confirmed in the main scientific journals related to tourism and therefore is expected an increase in papers involve with sustainable tourism development in the coming years.
