Over time, Social Work has faced complex challenges linked to the lack of professional recognition, the need to strengthen academic education, and continuous transformations within the socioeconomic and political context. This research examines the historical evolution of professional Social Work education in Ecuador during the 1938–2026 period, taking curricular foundations as the core axis of analysis. A qualitative historical-documentary methodology was employed, combining primary sources (syllabi, regulations, and national development plans) and secondary sources (Latin American and global academic literature) through a critical decolonial perspective and a human rights-based approach. The results identify four fundamental stages in this process: a) the welfare-charitable phase (1938–1969); b) reconceptualization and the critical turn (1970–1989); c) the institutionalization of human rights and interculturality (1990–2007); and d) curricular complexification oriented toward social justice, sustainability, and technology (2008–2026). The study addresses the strengths and gaps of each stage, connecting global trends with local curricular dynamics while invigorating the discipline's epistemological, methodological, and ethical-political debate. It is concluded that Social Work education in Ecuador has decisively evolved from a welfare-based paradigm toward a comprehensive model that demands competencies in research, technopolitics, and public advocacy, reaffirming its commitment to social justice and the defense of rights of vulnerable populations.
