Abstract

With a peculiar red hue, blood is a common tissue of all vertebrates. As part of its functions, blood provides oxygen and nutrients to all the body’s organs in addition to removing toxic waste. Althoug in general terms in humans’ blood is the same between individuals, there are important differences related to the genetic bases of each person. These differences determine the classification of individuals in a particular way and in polulation groups, and also establish the propensity of people to suffer certain diseases. Blood has been considered a life enhancer in different cultures and, considering its particularities, it is. Here, we review some characteristics of blood and the pathologies to which it is expossed. Its importance in transfusion processes is also noted.
