OTRA PERSPECTIVA DEL TREN MAYA EN TABASCO: RECONFIGURACIÓN DE LAS LOCALIDADES BOCA DEL CERRO Y VILLA EL TRIUNFO
Keywords:
Maya Train; Socio environmental impact; Territorial reconfiguration; Sustainable development and Participatory planningAbstract
The article critically examines the social, economic, and environmental impacts of the Tren Maya, a major infrastructure project in southeastern Mexico. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews and field observations were conducted in April and May 2024, focusing on communities located along Section 1.
Findings reveal a duality of effects on the economic side, temporary job creation, increased local tourism, and commercial activity are noted. However, these gains contrast with forced relocations, infrastructure deterioration, social fragmentation, and loss of natural resources due to deforestation and wildlife displacement. This tension highlights the lack of effective participatory planning and inclusive territorial management.
The analysis suggests that the Tren Maya transcends its technical or touristic nature, emerging as a complex social phenomenon that reshapes relationships between territory, community, and development policies. The urgency of implementing environmental mitigation, equitable social compensation, and institutional strengthening is emphasized to ensure community sustainability.
Finally, the article proposes a research agenda focused on sustainable economy, mobility, social well-being, community infrastructure, and public health, aiming to contribute theoretical and methodological insights for balanced tourism development in southeastern Mexico.
