La melatonina como tratamiento alternativo en tiempos de pandemia por COVID-19

La melatonina o N-acetil-5-metoxiptriptamina es una hormona sintetizada a partir del aminoácido esencial triptófano fundamentalmente por las células de la glándula pineal. Las funciones de la melatonina son muy variadas y muchas de ellas todavía poco conocidas. Se ha estudiado ampliamente su efecto antioxidante, antiinflamatorio y antiviral en diferentes modelos biológicos tanto in vitro como en modelos animales. En esta mini revisión se dan a conocer las experiencias con el uso de la melatonina y se destaca s potencial uso terapeutico durante la pandemia de COVID-19 y el tratamiento de las secuelas ya ampliamente descritas.
